We’re delighted and super excited to announce that Prof. Jessica Meeuwig has been appointed the Australian Academy of Technology, Science and Engineering’s 2019 Eminent Scientist for Western Australia.
Here we describe the first underwater sighting of Shepherd’s beaked whale (Tasmacetus shepherdi). Two individuals were observed together on video footage obtained via mid-water stereo-Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems (BRUVS) deployed off the coast of Inaccessible Island, Tristan da Cunha, in the South Atlantic.
Congratulations to Prof. Jessica Meeuwig and Dr. James Hehre on winning Singularity University’s Global Impact Challenge (GIC) for Western Australia and the finals in Melbourne! The University of Western Australia’s Marine Futures Lab won for their idea to halt and reverse global fisheries declines by developing open access technology for governments and stakeholders to better evaluate, manage and protect important fisheries.
Globally recognised fisheries economist, Prof. Rashid Sumaila deliver a free public lecture at the University Club of Western Australia, UWA. How to successfully manage the ocean to ensure long term sustainability while meeting the needs of people from same? In this lecture Professor Sumaila will explore this question couched around three key issues…
Marine fisheries are in crisis, requiring twice the fishing effort of the 1950s to catch the same quantity of fish, and with many fleets operating beyond economic or ecological sustainability. A possible consequence of diminishing returns in this race to fish is serious labour abuses, including modern slavery, which exploit vulnerable workers to reduce costs.
