PhD title: The ecology of a submerged cultural landscape: pairing Indigenous cultural values and marine research to understand Sea Country in the Recherche Archipelago

Start date: January 2022

This PhD builds on the ecological knowledge of the fish assemblages of the Recherche Archipelago in the context of Indigenous cultural values. The Recherche Archipelago is a remote chain of islands off Western Australia’s (WA) south coast valued for its diverse marine life and relatively untouched coastal waters. Despite its value, the archipelago remains significantly understudied and little is known about the distribution, abundance and threats to fishes. In 2021, the WA Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) proposed the creation of a South Coast Marine Park that includes the Recherche Archipelago.

The Esperance Tjaltjraak Native Title Aboriginal Corporation (ETNTAC), the Native Title body for the Kepa Kurl Wudjari people in the Esperance region of WA, has welcomed the proposal and their role as joint managers with DBCA in the co-design and co-management of the marine park. This PhD aims to pair the cultural values and ecological knowledge of ETNTAC Elders and Rangers with western marine science methods to characterise fish assemblages in the vastly understudied Recherche Archipelago.
