Australia’s Marine Parks:
Ensuring Benefits for Oceans and People
This is Australia’s once-in-a-decade chance to get marine protection right.
Every ten years, Australia must review its marine park networks. The Temperate East, Coral Sea, North, North-west, and South-west networks were proclaimed in 2018. By law, they face their next review in 2028. This is a rare, once-in-a-decade chance to correct past compromises, close the gaps, and secure lasting protection for Australia’s oceans.
At the 2025 UN Ocean Conference, the Minister for the Environment committed Australia to protecting at least 30% of its oceans in highly protected zones, areas free from extractive activities (Watt 2025). The 2028 review is the opportunity to turn that promise into reality.
Please read our science statement encouraging the Commonwealth to deliver marine protected networks that deliver outcomes that support oceans and people, and consider adding your name to ensure the science is heard.
